Should My Student Still Prepare for and Take the SAT?
More than likely, the answer is yes. Here are some important considerations:
– A majority of colleges have gone “test optional” which means that they are still accepting test scores as part of the admissions process. Remember that your student’s competition will be sending their scores. In short, if your student’s test score will help them (for example to offset a lower GPA) send them. If it won’t help them, don’t send. Not sure? Get an expert’s opinion.
– According to U.S. News and World Report (October, 2023), approximately 20% of universities and colleges still require SAT scores including many of the nation’s top colleges. Examples include MIT, Georgetown, University of Florida, Florida State, and Purdue.
– Thinking of a sports scholarship? Most coaches still want to see the scores, in part for stipend or scholarship purposes, in addition to academic standing.
– Skills acquired through SAT prep also help students succeed in college!
o Advanced test-taking strategies
o Critical thinking skills
o Advanced reading comprehension and analysis skills
o A review of all math including pre-Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra
o Writing skills (but not essay, they’re not on the tests anymore) including grammar, sentence structure, composition enrichment, etc.
