The First Week of College: A New Beginning for Students and Parents

College isn’t just a transition for students. It’s a transition for parents, too.

As the owners of ACE Tutoring and parents of a first year college student ourselves, we’re experiencing this transition from two perspectives. After more than 20 years of helping students prepare academically for their next steps, we’re now experiencing firsthand what it feels like to send our own child off to college.

And one thing has become especially clear: the first year of college is about much more than academics. It’s about learning how to become independent.

What Can Students Expect During the First Week?

The first week of college can feel like a whirlwind. Students are meeting roommates, finding their classrooms, navigating campus, attending orientation activities, making new friends, and figuring out where to eat, study, do laundry, and even get their textbooks.

Then the classes begin.

College academics can be a major adjustment from high school. Professors may provide fewer reminders about assignments and exams, and students are expected to take greater responsibility for keeping track of deadlines, managing their time, studying effectively, and asking for help when they need it.

At the same time, students are adjusting to living away from home. They may be excited by their new independence one moment and homesick the next. They are learning to share a living space, make their own decisions, establish routines, and navigate unfamiliar social situations.

All of this takes time.

The Unique Challenges of the First Year

First year students are learning how to manage several new responsibilities at once:

Time management: Balancing classes, studying, social activities, exercise, work, and everyday responsibilities.

Academic independence: No one may be reminding them about tomorrow’s assignment or upcoming exam. Students have to develop systems that work for them.

Finding their people: Building new friendships and finding a sense of belonging doesn’t always happen immediately.

Homesickness: Missing family, friends, pets, familiar routines, and home can happen even when a student is having a great college experience.

Roommate and social challenges: Living with someone new and navigating different personalities can require patience, communication, and compromise.

Knowing when to ask for help: Learning to reach out to professors, advisors, resident assistants, tutoring centers, and other campus resources is an important part of becoming an independent college student.

Parents: Your Role Is Changing, Too

As parents, one of the hardest parts of this transition can be knowing when to step in and when to step back.

After years of helping our children manage schedules, communicate with teachers, remember deadlines, and solve problems, it’s natural to want to continue doing those things.

But college is an opportunity for students to begin taking ownership of their lives.

Instead of immediately solving a problem, try asking questions to encourage students to think independently, identify resources, make decisions, and take ownership of solving their own problems.

“What do you think would be a good way to handle it?”

“Who could you talk to about this?”

“What do you think would be the best next step?”

These questions help students develop confidence and problem solving skills while still knowing that their families are there to support them.

And sometimes the most helpful thing a parent can do is simply be there and listen.

A quick text saying, “Thinking of you! Hope you’re having a good day ❤” can mean a lot without making a student feel monitored.

Give Them and Yourself Time

The first week may be exciting one day and overwhelming the next. That’s normal.

Students don’t need to have everything figured out immediately. They are learning how to manage college academics, relationships, responsibilities, and independence all at once.

And parents are learning something, too: how to support their children as they grow into the adults they’ve been preparing them to become.

At ACE Tutoring, we’ve spent more than 20 years helping students build the academic skills, confidence, and independence they need for success. As parents of a first year college student ourselves, we’re reminded that those skills extend far beyond the classroom.

College is a new beginning for students and for their families. Give everyone time to adjust, be patient with the process, and remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
